Unfortunately, the Draft Regional Plan is a profound disappointment as it no longer reflects the concerns of the Backlands Coalition for our Backlands Environment

The 1,921 page document we are commenting on is the proposed Regional Plan and amendment package. This is a huge document and so we summarize some of the information most relevant to the Backlands below.

The Backlands Coalition’s first written submission on the Regional Plan was in August 2020.  We have had hikes, visits and several meetings with the planners.  Hundreds of hours of our advocacy have been put into helping to shape the Regional Plan. We were very optimistic as the Planners seemed to understand our concerns about the environment and these were addressed in the last draft of the Regional Plan. Unfortunately, the current document is a profound disappointment as it no longer reflects our concerns for the environment.

HRM’s Recommended Approaches

The relevant sections for the Backlands are contained in Attachment A-4, Table 2 (approximately 53 pages into the document). We have extracted the “Recommended Approaches” from the two charts (A & B) that HRM Planning staff provided.
Table 2, reproduced below relates to Case 22257 and Case 025. (Click anywhere on the table for a larger version)

A Briefing Note
Jillian Ramsey of Our HRM Alliance has provided a brifing note which takes a broad view and outlines several key Amendment Requests that reflect urgent community priorities for environmental protection, municipal independence, and responsible planning.
