Nova Scotia Provincial Bird returns to the Backlands! 16Apr2026

Report from Joshua Barss Donham,  Apr 14, 2026:

Thursday, April 9th, Fulton and I saw an Osprey over the McIntosh Run at Princeton flying in the direction of Osprey Ridge.

Today, Taiya and I witnessed the Princeton Ave Osprey’s return with much vocalizing and spiralling about, bonding ritual, high above the nest before settling down in/on it together.

‘Difficult to see in the photos, but the Osprey (female) perched closest to the nest edge is feeding on a very large brook trout, one can see the pink flesh in the other photo, a trout likely procured from the McIntosh Run; there is a big pool just 100 metres from the nest.

Only once before have I witnessed the moment of the Princeton pair’s return to the nest, 2023 I think, and the first thing one of ospreys did, after they had both inspecting and settling into the nest together for a few moments, was to fly up to the big pool and return with a nice trout! Long flight, very hungry!

What an exciting time of year!
