Wikipedia description of HWA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hemlock_woolly_adelgid\">Wikipedia<\/a> (15Nov2023), references and some links removed:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <b>hemlock woolly adelgid<\/b> (<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><i><b>Adelges tsugae<\/b><\/i>), or\u00a0<b>HWA<\/b>, is an\u00a0insect\u00a0of the order\u00a0<a title=\"Hemiptera\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hemiptera\">Hemiptera<\/a>\u00a0(true bugs) native to\u00a0East Asia. It feeds by sucking sap from hemlock and spruce trees (<i><a title=\"Tsuga\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsuga\">Tsuga<\/a><\/i>\u00a0spp.;\u00a0<i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Picea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Picea\">Picea<\/a><\/i>\u00a0spp.).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn its native range, HWA is not a serious pest because populations are managed by natural predators and parasitoids and by host resistance.<sup id=\"cite_ref-inspection.gc.ca_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn eastern North America\u00a0it is a destructive\u00a0pest\u00a0that threatens the eastern hemlock (<i><a title=\"Tsuga canadensis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsuga_canadensis\">Tsuga canadensis<\/a><\/i>) and the Carolina hemlock (<i><a title=\"Tsuga caroliniana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tsuga_caroliniana\">Tsuga caroliniana<\/a><\/i>). HWA is also found in western North America, where it has likely been present for thousands of years. HWA in the Backlands<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8216;Just getting going on monitoring<br \/>\nView iNaturalist Project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/projects\/eastern-hemlock-in-halifax-ns-backlands\">Eastern Hemlock in Halifax NS Backlands<\/a> (set up May 5, 2025)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>DRAFTING\/TESTING MAY 5, 2025&#8230; The purpose: To document occurrence of Eastern Hemlock and of HWA (Hemlock Wooly Adelgid) in the Backlands (Halifax, NS, Canada).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To indicate that a search has been made for HWA on a particular specimen, add the tag &#8220;BacklandsHWAneg&#8221; when no evidence of HWA is found, or &#8220;BacklandsHWApos&#8221; when there is evidence of HWA (documented with photos).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Currently, our understanding is that E. Hemlock is restricted to few areas on the periphery of the Backlands; it&#8217;s absence over most of the area is probably attributable to it being very fire intolerant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are some very large hemlocks and patches of hemlock-dominated stands to the east of Williams Lake (and perhaps elsewhere) that are not documented on the Nova Scotia Provincial Landscape Map Viewer. So it&#8217;s &#8216;helpful to document &#8220;big&#8221; hemlocks (20 in\/0.5 m diameter at breast height and larger) as they confer Old Growth features to the landscape; to do so, measure the cbh (&#8220;circumference at breast height&#8221; &#8211; at 4.5 ft\/1.4 m above the base); calculate the diameter as [cbh*7\/22].<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Project Map below showing the Backlands area has two envelopes (polygons), the inner one for the Backlands proper, and the outer one a slightly larger area so it includes nearby hemlocks which could be hosts for HWA and possibly infected before hemlocks in the Backlands proper are infected.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also view <a href=\"https:\/\/backlandscoalition.ca\/?page_id=2818\"><strong>Lovers Lane to Turtle Bay<\/strong><\/a> for description of an area on the shore at the northeast end of Williams lake with a concentration of hemlocks and some very large individual trees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. How to Help<\/strong><br \/>\nReceived from Shaiuna Doll, HRM Environmental Specialist, May 5, 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv5050107857MsoNormal\">&#8220;If you are interested in continuing your contributions to the municipality\u2019s efforts to combat HWA spread in the Halifax Region, I have included a list of things individuals can do to help:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"yiv5050107857MsoNormal\">Actively monitor hemlock trees in your neighbourhood for infestation and report suspected HWA sightings to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/home\/311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">311<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsinvasives.ca\/report-an-invasive-species\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Nova Scotia Invasives Species Council<\/a>, and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/about-cfia\/contact-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CFIA<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"yiv5050107857MsoNormal\">Avoid hanging bird feeders on or near hemlock trees.<\/li>\n<li class=\"yiv5050107857MsoNormal\">Only buy hemlock trees from <b>local<\/b> suppliers, check with the supplier that they are aware of HWA, and inspect trees carefully before purchasing.\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li class=\"yiv5050107857MsoNormal\">Consider purchasing and planting alternative species for the next 5-10 years unless committed to treating planted hemlocks against HWA in the short-term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yiv5050107857MsoNormal\">Always use a lint brush on clothes and a bristled brush on shoes after spending time in a hemlock forest (especially if HWA presence has been confirmed in the area).
