\"\"Representatives of the Coalition\u2019s member groups have been meeting monthly to discuss ways and means to accomplish our mission<\/strong>: to ensure no loss of wildlife habitat in the Backlands and to preserve them for natural, historical, cultural, conservation, educational, recreational and common use.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Our recent focus has been to collect, compile, and present information to the HRM planning staff, our Councillor, and various Regional Council committees to inform them about the value of preserving the Backlands and its fragile and unique ecology for environmental and recreational purposes, since further development will destroy this small piece of nature that will only become more important as a retreat as HRM gets denser.<\/p>\n

This activity has been happening as part of the review process for updating the HRM Regional Plan, which will enter its final and 5th phase after Oct 27. Until then, the draft plan created in phase 4 is available for feedback from the public – which means all of us – so if you want to help achieve our mission, please provide\u00a0 comments as directed below.<\/p>\n

It may be helpful to listen to the recent CBC radio interview with Boris Worm<\/a> about why we want to save the Backlands from any more development.<\/p>\n

Regional Plan Review<\/h3>\n

Thank you for your interest in the Halifax Regional Municipality\u2019s Regional Plan Review! <\/strong>
\nWe are pleased to inform you that a Draft Regional Plan was published and presented to Regional Council on June 20, 2023<\/a>. The Draft Plan responds to the region\u2019s population growth and need for housing, the need to act on climate and equity, and updates policies to reflect the Priority Plans actions, including the Suburban Plan, Integrated Mobility Plan, Halifax Green Network Plan, HalifACT, People Planet Prosperity, and the forthcoming Sharing Our Stories Plan.

\nThe municipality is now engaging the public and seeking feedback on the Draft Regional Plan.<\/strong>
\nPlease visit our project website: www.shapeyourcityhalifax.ca\/regional-plan<\/a> to read the draft plan, provide feedback, and find an in-person engagement event near you. The public engagement period will run until October 27, 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All public feedback will be brought to Regional Council in a What We Heard Report<\/em><\/strong> in late 2023, and a complete amendment package will follow. Before any amendments can be approved, Regional Council must hold a public hearing. We will send you an update when the We Heard Report<\/em><\/strong> Report is available and when the public hearing has been scheduled. Please stay tuned!<\/p>\n
