Visitors to this page are encouraged to to visit Katie&#8217;s original post, well illustrated with graphics.<\/p>\n<p>Says Katie:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Avoid Wildfire Areas<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first way to \u2018survive\u2019 a wildfire while hiking is to avoid high risk areas! This is principle #1 of LNT \u2013 plan ahead and be prepared.<em>Know before you go and asses your decision to hike there<\/em>;<\/p>\n<p>1. what is the fire status in the area?<br \/>\n2. are there fires already burning?<br \/>\n3. what is the wind doing today or during the time you plan to be out?<br \/>\n4. note the fire ban restrictions<\/p>\n<p>BEFORE YOU HIT THE TRAIL<br \/>\n&#8211; Check online for current conditions,\u00a0 check for any warnings from park authorities.<br \/>\n&#8211; For added safety, contact the ranger office and make sure that there is no fire in your desired trail.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly check for current updates on wildfire status in the area you want to hike &#8211; Nova Scotia, see <a href=\"http:\/\/novascotia.ca\/wildfire\">www.novascotia.ca\/wildfire<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Understand Wild Fire Behaviour:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Fire burns faster uphill due to updrafts and smoke rises.<br \/>\n&#8211; Fire needs wood and vegetation to travel.<br \/>\n&#8211; Natural or manmade firebreaks like streams, roads help to slow down wildfires, [not always works]<\/p>\n<p><strong>You have spotted a wildfire, now what?<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Plan an escape route before the fire reaches you.<br \/>\n&#8211; Travel upwind and downhill.<br \/>\n&#8211; Aim for areas with little or no vegetatio.n<br \/>\n&#8211; Stay away from canyons, saddle and draws as they will funnel heat towards you.<br \/>\n&#8211; Head towards streams or any areas that have already had burnout.<br \/>\n&#8211; Try to spot natural (stream), or man-made firebreakers like woodcleared area, road. or fire line made by park authorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you get caught in a fire<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Keep your clothes dry; wet clothing will scald under high heat.<br \/>\n&#8211; If you are in grasslands. try to clear the vegetation so that there is nothing to burn near you.<br \/>\n&#8211; lie down &amp;dig a hole and stick your face in it to avoid breathing smoke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to survive a forest fire while hiking:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; If the wind is blowing toward the fire from your position, then run into the wind.<br \/>\n&#8211; If the wind is behind the fire. blowing toward you &#8211; run on a course that puts you perpendicular to the wind.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IkAv4tdQyKs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you survived<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Find out an escape route through the area that is already burned, or with less vegetation.<br \/>\n&#8211; Be vigilant walking near burnt trees. as the trees of branches may fall at any time.
